ENGLISH – Places can now be booked for a beginners' course in English for speakers of other languages at St Mary's Community Centre, Chequerfield. The course will be held on Fridays from 10am to noon. Telephone the centre for details on 01977 705341.

Thursday February 12
MEETING – East Hardwick WI meets in the village hall at 7.15pm. The speaker will be J Smith from Wakefield Council on recycling. Visitors and new members welcome.
DANCE – A sequence dance will be held at Trinity Methodist Church, Castleford, from 8pm to 10.30pm with music by Lou and Kath. Admission is £2.50 including supper.

Friday February 13
OPEN – The Thornycroft Centre, Pontefract, holds an open day from 10am to 3pm. Free adult training taster sessions and a tour of the centre. A two-course lunch is available daily Monday to Friday at 11.45am. For further information contact Maria or Clare on 01977 703384.
JUMBLE – Airedale Methodist Church, Elizabeth Drive, holds a jumble sale at 11am.
YOGA – Ash Tree Children's Centre, Ashton Road, Castleford, holds toddler yoga classes every Friday for six weeks for children aged 18 months to five years living in the Castleford area. Call Mandy or Ros for further information or to book a place on 01977 723012.
CEILIDH – The Mayor of Wakefield, Coun Jacqui Williams, hosts a charity ceilidh featuring The Shroggs at Ossett Town Hall from 7.30pm to 11.30pm, with pie and pea supper. Tickets, price £9, are available from Mark Jubb, Mayor's Office, Room 43, Town Hall, Wood Street, Wakefield, telephone 01924 305345. Proceeds to the Mayor's charity fund.
SOUL – Manifesto Soul Club holds a northern soul night at Kellingley Club from 8pm to 1am with DJs Pete Jay and Little Av joined by guest DJs Derek Greenhoff, Tom Wheelhouse and Mark Whiteley. Admission is £3.

Saturday February 14
BOOKS – Pontefract library is holding a book sale from today until Friday February 20.
TABLE – Castleford United Reformed Church's uniformed groups and church members hold a table top sale and coffee moring from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Admission is free.
COFFEE – A coffee morning with stalls will be held at the United Reformed Church, The Croft, Knottingley, from 10am to 11.30am.
VALENTINE – A St Valentine's Day coffee morning with a variety of stalls will be held in St Michael's Church, Carleton, from 10am to noon. Proceeds for St Michael's funds.
CONCERT – Featherstone, Castleford, Micklefield and Sharlston Male Voice Choirs stage a charity concert at the Alice Bacon Community Hall, Normanton, at 7pm. All proceeds in aid of the Alzheimer's Society. Tickets, price £6, are available from the choirs or pay on the door.
DANCE – A St Valentine's Day line dance social will be held at Outwood Memorial Hall, Wakefield, from 8pm to 11.30pm. Admission is £3.50, provide your own drinks. Further details from Brenda on 01977 701013.

Monday February 16
MOVEMENT – Ash Tree Children's Centre, Ashton Road, Castleford, is holding Melody Bear movement classes every Monday from 11am to noon for children aged 18 months to five years in the Castleford area. Contact Mandy or Ros on 01977 723012 for further information.
MEETING – Womens Aglow International meets at Thornycroft, Halfpenny Lane, Pontefract, at 7pm.
PANTO – Brotherton and Byram Players present the pantomime Dick Whittington, by Norman Robbins, at Brotherton Village Hall from tonight to Saturday February 21. Performances start at 7.15pm with a Saturday matinee at 2pm. Tickets, price £6 and £5 concessions, are on sale in the village hall from 2pm on Sundays or on 01977 672549.
POKER – A Texas Hold 'Em poker league is held every Monday at the Junction Hotel, Featherstone, at 7.30pm. For details telephone Mick on 0794 952 1371.

Tuesday February 17
FUN – Castleford's Lock Lane Sports Centre is running football fun days for boys and girls aged seven to 13 during half-term. The sessions take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday February 17, 18 and 19 from 9.30am to noon, including a short snack break. Prices are £5 per day or you can book all three for £13. Anyone interested should call the sports centre on 01977 510200. Sessions are limited to a maximum of 30 each day, so early booking is advised.
DANCE – Ash Tree Children's Centre, Ashton Road, Castleford, is holding dancing buddies dance workshops for three to five-year-olds in the Castleford area today and on Thursday February 19 from 10am to 11am. PIANIST – Castleford pianist Jill Crossland will play works by Bach, Beethoven and Chopin at Wakefield Cathedral at 1pm.
HISTORICAL – Castleford and District Historical Society meets in the United Reformed Church Hall, Back Bank Street, at 7.30pm when Mrs E Walton will give an illustrated talk on The Pilkingtons of Chevet Hall and their way of life from 1870-1914. Admission for visitors is £1.50.
CIVIC – Pontefract Civic Society meets in Pontefract Museum at 7.30pm. The speaker will be David Ward, editor of the Pontefract and Castleford Express, on Life On A Local Newspaper. Admission for members is £2 and £2.50 for non members, including light refreshments.

Wednesday February 18
AUCTION – Castleford Aquarist Society holds an auction at Albion Street WMC. Booking in of lots from 7pm, auction starts at 8pm.

Thursday February 19
DEMONSTRATION – A demonstration of figure drawing and painting will be given by Harry Malkin at Bridge Arts, Sagar Street, Castleford, from 6pm to 8pm. Admission £2 to include tea and coffee.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL – Pontefract and District Archaeological Society meets in the lecture room of Pontefract Museum on Friday February 20 at 7.15pm. Andrew Morrison, of York Museums, will give a talk titled The Yorkshire Museum and its Archaeological Marvels. Admission for visitors is £2.
DANCE – Modern and sequence dancing will be held at Eggborough Sports and Social Club, at the power station, on Friday February 20 from 7.30pm to 11pm. Tickets £2.50, pay on the door, for Eggborough Methodist Church.
LINE – There will be a line dance at Eggborough Village Hall on Saturday February 21. Admission is £2.50, including tea and biscuits. No bar, provide your own drink.
CRAFT – A self-help craft group starts at the Parish Rooms, Bell Lane, Ackworth, on Monday February 23 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm including knitting, sewing and embroidery. There will be a small charge to cover costs. For details telephone 01977 613801 or 01977 611583.

COFFEE – St Andrew's Church, Ferrybridge, holds a coffee morning in the mission room on Saturday February 28 from 10am to noon. There will be a variety of stalls and raffle, coffee and biscuits. Admission 50p.
