CROWDS gathered to watch Mayor of Wakefield Coun Allan Garbutt wave farewell to a "tremendous" year in office with a civic parade.
Coun Garbutt, who will hand over the chains of office to deputy mayor Jacqui Williams in May, led the promenade through his village ward of Ackworth on Saturday.

He said: “I’ve had an absolutely tremendous year.

“It’s been a privilege and an honour to serve as mayor and I’ve met many wonderful people along the way.”

Mayors and dignitaries from across the county stepped out to join the parade, which set off from Ackworth School and stopped for a service at St Cuthbert’s Church.

Coun Garbutt added: “It was a lovely event and very well attended.

“We thought it would be nice to have a civic parade in Ackworth as people there might not have seen one before.”
