ACKWORTH students will set off on a African expedition this summer following a musical finale of a year of fundraising events.
Four opera artists raised £1,200, which will help Ackworth School pupils support a community project during a two week trip to Namibia, in the special concert on Saturday March 7.
Youngsters in the school's World Challenge team have collected £9,242 in total and are now gearing up for the trip this July.
Teacher Libby Ullstein, who is leading the expedition, said: "Our opera evening was a stunning climax to a year of fundraising events from the challengers, who will set off on their expedition at the end of the summer term.
"The audience was treated to an evening of breathtakingly beautiful performances from much-loved arias and songs from the shows.
"On the Africa trip students will provide valuable assistance to local children through both construction work and teaching, in an area where youngsters enjoy few facilities.
"Our thanks go to all who supported the concert and to performers Alison Roddy, Anne-Marie Gibbons, Hubert Francis and Anthony Kraus, who gave so generously of their time and talent."
