Raffle in Gary's memory
YOUNG soccer players in Ackworth are organising a special raffle in memory of football stalwart Gary McManus who died last month.
Tributes flooded in to the Express when the 39-year-old – a coach, manager, chairman, player and physio at Kellingley Welfare FC – died after a heart attack following a training session at the club.
Now youngsters and volunteers at Ackworth Junior FC have rallied to raise £1,500 for the Knottingley father-of-four's family.
Club founder and coach Dave Roughley, of Low Ackworth, said: "There is a lot of work that needs to be done but we won't stop fundraising until we raise £1,500.
"I'd known Gary for a good few years and his death was such a shock to everyone.
"We want to help his family and think a lot of people will support our fundraising in memory of Gary, who put his life into his club and football."
The club is also auctioning off a Castleford Tigers shirt – signed by all of last season's promotion-winning squad – to boost fundraising.
Dave added: "Football is my sport but I know the shirt will be of great value to Tigers fans. It's worth too much to be included in the raffle so it will be auctioned separately.
"It was donated by Castleford firm 2Bees and we've also had a few raffle prize donations from other businesses.
"The event is planned to take place on Easter weekend and in Ackworth but full details have still to be finalised."
To donate a raffle prize, or for more details, telephone Dave Roughley on 0795 606 0044.
