STRONGMEN in Ackworth are feeling the burn as they prepare to pull a 12-tonne bus at the village's gala.
Rugby stars from the Ackworth Jaguars squad will haul the vehicle a mile and a quarter through the village in an unusual team effort to raise cash towards buying their own playing field.

Team coach and Leeds Rhinos scrum half Rob Burrow has been preparing his men for the sponsored challenge during the Ackworth Gala on Saturday June 27.

Fundraiser Harry Fraser said: "We want a pitch of our own in Ackworth and thought this bus pull would be a fun way to kick off the fundraising.

"Our slogan is 'we've pulled the girls, now we're pulling the bus' and hopefully that will help us get some sponsors.

"The team did a practice run last week with a and had a great time.

"Pulling the bus that far is going to be a challenge but we are looking forward to it and all money raised will go into our pitch fund."

Shearings bus company has donated the vehicle for players to drag through the village from Brackenhill to the Carr Bridge playing fields, where they train and play.

Club secretary Brian Briggs said: "This is just the start of our pitch fund and we have got a few sponsors so far.

"Everyone that does sponsor will be promoted by us, as well as at the village cricket club where we are based, and we are hoping to get banners for the bus too.

"I think we've been put last in the procession but the bus pull should be a different attraction for the popular gala."
