Best bargain people carriers on the second-hand market

Buying a used MPV? The choice is almost limitless, with models at virtually every price level, size, seat configuration and style. If you’re on a budget and looking for a bargain, there’s no reason to think your options will be limited, either, as is proven by our top 10 list of great sub-£10,000 people carriers. Whether you want five seats or seven, a great driving experience or impressive efficiency, there’s something for all tastes.

10. Renault Scenic

2b56fa9da82d3f02556253aaee6e2f5416c52c6b

Choose from the five-seat Scenic and bigger, seven-seat Grand Scenic, and this Renault – the original compact MPV – should do you proud. Comfy, spacious and bargain priced, the model boasts a great range of diesel powerplants as well. Only occasional electrical issues blot its copybook.
We found: 2012 1.5 dCi Dynamique TomTom Energy (33,000 miles): £9,193

9. Honda FR-V

09f78b261848b83872774f4880375068c385bbc8

We love the Honda FR-V’s sophisticated drive and strong engines, while its wide, square, relatively short shape makes it easy to park. The unusual cabin configuration features two rows of three seats. Check the air-con works before buying.
We found: 2009 1.8 i-VTEC ES (57,000 miles): £7,700

8. Toyota Verso

51ddff5b0b242213170847cb7aa64c548a3ec72e

The relatively unexciting Toyota Verso is nonetheless brilliantly reliable, and its slightly raucous diesel engine is very efficient. The seven-seat compact MPV looked better post facelift; just try to avoid the thirsty 1.8 petrol auto.
We found: 2009 1.6 V-Matic Icon (21,000 miles): £9,995

7. Ford Galaxy

a920b42fd9821d823e009e4b4c4b5ad187713b3a

Despite the larger dimensions of the full-size Ford Galaxy MPV compared with its sportier-looking S-Max stablemate, it’s keenly priced and is very good to drive. The roomy cabin is very practical and comfortable even with a full complement of seven passengers. Avoid ex-cabs, and be sure to peruse the service history.
We found: 2011 2.0 TDCi 140 Powershift (63,000 miles): £9,988

6. Citroen Grand C4 Picasso

125a8d2c4973ea060b9fb4cd5df1897e188e7d5c

You get typical French fun and style from the five-seat Citroen C4 Picasso and seven-seat Grand C4 Picasso, with their great kit levels and fresh, cheerful cabins. The practical compact MPV is exceedingly good value, but the downside is flimsy built quality and occasionally niggly electrics.
We found: 2013 1.6 HDi Platinum (20,000 miles): £9,710

5. Volkswagen Touran

5a62b3c8448e0724400079b05c7c998574bea59e

No-nonsense VW Touran is a sensible buy for sensible people, but it stands up well in all the main compact MPV requirement categories. Spacious? Check! Seven seats? Check! Well built? Check! Efficient diesels? Hmm – just find out whether a potential buy has been affected by the VW emissions scandal before handing over your cash…
We found: 2010 2.0 TDI Sport: £9,900

4. Kia Carens

44bcb2a58bf6ce616323f6deff65404a16ff1ad7

The original model wasn’t too impressive, but this second-gen Carens was a massive improvement. Kia’s trademark seven-year warranty should still have some time to run, even on older models, but you’re unlikely to need to call upon its services as the Carens is such a reliable model. The diesel is accomplished and the equipment levels are impressive, too.
We found: 2013 1.7 CRDi 2 (33,000 miles): £9,500

3. Ford S-Max

3e06770d941d3e4e6e20ef56ae27b2d3ca6b5552

Simply one of the best people carriers money can buy. Melding impressive handling with a refined drive, the seven-seat Ford S-Max is an excellent everyday user. Its stylish looks and driving appeal over its roomier Galaxy stablemate can mean it commands a small premium, but what a great buy.
We found: 2010 2.0 TDCi Zetec (33,000 miles): £9,593

2. Peugeot 5008

b9a16d8320880b65446945b12a3ca9262a246161

Heavy depreciation makes Peugeot 5008 a super-bargain as a used buy, even thought it’s one of the strongest models from the manufacturer in recent times. It’s practical and stylish, with an enjoyable drive, fabulous comfort and plenty of standard gear. Just watch out for electrical niggles.
We found: 2012 1.6 HDi Allure (34,000 miles): £9,806

1. Vauxhall Zafira Tourer

2ca4ff7b054867fa92d947a92f771c42133e3252

The star of our top 10, the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer carries seven in its well built and super-versatile cabin. Its dynamics impress, too, with good ride comfort and a tidy drive. Choose from a vast selection on the used market, and its bargain price seems even more appealing when you factor in its good reliability record.
We found: 2014 2.0 CDTi Exclusiv (25,000 miles): £9,994
