CASTLEFORD'S troubled £4.8m footbridge has been shortlisted for a Prime Minister's honour – despite still not being open.
Vandalism and supply delays have plagued the landmark bridge across the River Aire, which was expected to open in December.

But the project has been chosen from hundreds to enter this year’s Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award, that shows the contribution great design makes towards regeneration.

Judges described the bridge, designed by Renato Benedetti, as “a lovely sweeping footbridge offering the chance to linger on imaginatively designed benches”.

The winner of the award – which could also be claimed by the fish pass on Castleford weir – will be revealed in October.

The bridge, built by contractors Costain for Wakefield Council, is now expected to open this summer.
