CASTLEFORD's acclaimed £4.8m footbridge across the River Aire is a finalist in a national awards ceremony for waterway regeneration projects.
The s-shaped structure, which has been nominated for other honours and credited with attracting more tourists to the town, is in the running to win the Waterways Renaissance Awards 2009.

Run by The Waterways Trust and the British Urban Regeneratio
n Association, the honours recognise best practice in sustainable waterway regeneration and development.

Coun Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council's deputy leader and cabinet member for regeneration, said: "We are really proud of our projects to regenerate the district's waterfronts and being shortlisted in these awards is a great accolade.

"The schemes are the product of successful community-driven and partnership working.

"To see them enjoyed by residents and visitors alike is a real joy."

The landmark bridge, which completed Channel 4 documentary series The Castleford Project, was paid for by Wakefield Council, Yorkshire Forward and English Partnerships.

The Watefront Wakefield project – a scheme to open up the riverside and connect it to Wakefield city centre – has also been nominated for the awards. Winners will be announced on Tuesday March 31.
