TOP fire chief Phil Toase has announced his retirement after 34 years' service.
Mr Toase will stand down as chief fire officer of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue in September.
He took up the high-ranking post in 2000 after progressing up through the service, beginning his career in 1974 at Dewsbury fire station.
In 2004, he was honoured with a CBE for services to the fire and rescue service and held the presidency of the Chief Fire Officers’ Association during 2006 and 2007.
He said: “This has not been an easy decision for me personally as the fire and rescue service has been such a big part of my life for the last 34 years.
“I’ve been extremely proud to lead one of the finest fire and rescue services in the country and I have been privileged to work with some highly committed, loyal and dedicated people.
“I firmly believe the fire and rescue service is the finest and most rewarding profession anyone could wish for and I will very much miss being part of that extended family”.
