STRIKING designs for a new £60,000 sculpture to celebrate Castleford have gone on show so people can help select one for the town.
Three artists have created ideas for a structure to be installed at the centre of Henry Moore Square as the final scheme in regeneration initiative The Castleford Project.

The proposals are on display in the Bridge Arts centre, a former shop which was a base for the televised project.

Tim Shutter’s different designs for a Roman-style sculpture include nods to the town’s rugby and pottery past while a column with seating by Jo Fairfax represents a miner’s lamp.

The final design (pictured) by Walter Jack is themed around Castleford’s pottery and glass history and would be tiled inside with mosaics created by local children.

Alison Drake, chairman of Castleford Heritage Trust, said: “This is really exciting because we do want some more sculpture around the town and are are trying to build up our reputation for having it.

“We want something the town can grow to love and a piece that complements the arts, culture and heritage we already have here.

“I’m hoping that the community will join in and have a look at the designs to see which they prefer.”

Designs went on display at the Sagar Street centre yesterday and will be available until Wednesday June 17, after which the project steering group will consider comments to decide the winning idea.

Arts Council England and Wakefield Council are paying for the sculpture, which is expected to be installed in 2010.

Council leader Peter Box, a member of the steering group, said: “This is the final scheme to complete the Castleford Project – we want it to be a real celebration of the town and what we have to offer.

“We are looking forward to a piece of art which will make people sit up and take notice of Castleford.

“The river bridge is already drawing thousands of visitors into Castleford and has won three major architectural awards.

“We want a piece of art to complement the bridge and provide yet another reason for people to visit our town.”
