SAFETY-conscious pupils from across the district have been taught vital life-saving lessons at Pontefract fire station.
More than 400 pupils visited the station last week for the Danger Rangers event, to learn how to stay safe in a variety of scenarios including escaping from a fire and witnessing an abduction.

Representatives from the council, fire service, British Transport Police (BTP) and health visitors from Wakefield District Primary Care Trust were all on hand to deliver their expert knowledge to the children.

Lorraine Stewart, teaching assistant at Pontefract’s Halfpenny Lane Junior and Infant School, said: “The children absolutely loved it. It was very informative.

“In the fire scene, the children were taught what to do if there was a fire on a house landing. They all pretended to be having a sleepover in a bedroom when one of them discovered the fire. They learned that they should put towels along the bottom of the door and then throw the bedding out the window and lower the smaller children out first.

“It was very good. The children were talking about it all the way home.”

Other schools from the Five Towns which took part in the event were: Holy Family and St Michael’s Catholic Primary, Cobblers Lane Primary, Willow Park Junior, Halfpenny Lane Junior and Infant and St Giles CE Junior and Infant in Pontefract and Darrington CE Junior and Infant.
