TWO more prestigious accolades have been handed to Castleford's award-winning footbridge – taking its total prizes to four.
In the past two weeks, the £4.8m landmark structure has scooped an honour for excellence from the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Pro-Yorkshire Award for Community Benefit.
Alison Drake, chairman of Castleford Heritage Trust, said: "It seems to be every week now we hear the bridge has won another honour or people come to assess it for an award.
"I'm thrilled for Castleford, we can be very proud of what's been happening in the town thanks to the hard work of a lot of people."
The s-shaped bridge, designed by Renato Benedetti as the most ambitious scheme in the televised Castleford Project, was opened last July by the series' host Kevin McCloud.
Alison added: "It's a fantastic creation in artistic terms but the awards it has won have also been for the way it came about.
"That work wasn't easy, but it was worth it.
"We still have people travelling to see the bridge and it is in the running for another award."
Wakefield Council, Yorkshire Forward and English Partnerships paid for the footbridge and were involved in the project.
Castleford councillor Denise Jeffery, cabinet member for regeneration, said: "This iconic bridge is now nationally and internationally known.
"It has won four top awards which speaks volumes, not only for the wonderful bridge but the way the council, community and partner organisations worked together to see it completed."
The bridge has previously won a special award for partnership working from the Civic Trust and a national Waterways Renaissance award in the community category.
