FORMER traffic cop Les Batty says Castleford's congested streets could be brought to a standstill by major roadworks in the town
.
The 61-year-old says work to construct a new junction from Barnes Road and Leeds Road to the new £12m Glass Houghton Coalfields Link Road is causing traffic "chaos".
Leeds Road resident Mr Batty, a retired West Yorkshire Police officer, said: "It
is utter chaos.

"If there is an accident on the M62 traffic is diverted via Leeds Road. But now if there is a blockage on the motorway everything in Castleford will completely stop."
Work to reconstruct Barnes Road – expected to be shut until June 13 – is also taking place and a cul-de-sac will then be created outside Leeds Road properties. A diversion is available while Barnes Road is closed but Mr Batty said problems are piling up.

He added: "The diversion puts traffic in residential areas with narrow roads – as a former traffic cop I know that's dangerous.
"I only found out about the diversion by reading about it in the Express and although I live 100 metres from Asda on Leeds Road I now have to take a half-mile detour to get there.

"Pedestrian access is blocked on Leeds Road and you can't turn left or right from there. I've seen emergency vehicles forced to turn around because they didn't know the work was going on. All this will change when the new road is built, but when will that be?"
The 3.4km Glass Houghton Coalfields Link Road is part of Wakefield Council's plans to regenerate former pit sites at Normanton and Glass Houghton.

A spokeswoman for contractor Waystone Ltd – which is carrying out some of the work – said: "We accept the works are causing inconvenience and are making every effort to complete them as soon as possible. With any new road there will be a lack of familiarity for drivers and temporary traffic lights are in operation.
"They should be removed by Thursday May 29, easing congestion, although Barnes Road will remain closed for three weeks."

Ian Wiper, the council's service director for highways, added: "We check regularly with our on site inspector and he reports no undue traffic flow problems. For the diversion we chose routes similar to Barnes Road to avoid channelling motorists on to narrow roads.

"Residents were given advance warning of road closure, there has been further advance signage on site and we have publicised the work in advance to alert motorists. With a scheme on this scale there will be some disruption but we are working hard to keep it to a minimum."
