Sky to fly to Swiss clinic
BRAVE teen Sky-Marie Cartwright will start radical treatment to help save her sight this month after walkers stepped out on a sponsored hike.
The Castleford 16-year-old is flying to Switzerland for six to ten weeks of pioneering proton radiotherapy, which will shrink rare brain tumours and stop her going blind, on Tuesday April 29.
Sky-Marie's plight has touched the hearts of townsfolk who rallied to help pay for her treatment through fundraising events – including a 150-strong walk around Pontefract Racecourse on Sunday.
Her mum Tracy Cartwright, of Ambler Street, told the Express: "The clinic has confirmed Sky-Marie's treatment date and everything has happened so fast.
"Now we just want to get there because we'd like her to resume her studies at NEW college in September.
"We still don't know what the NHS will be able to pay for but she's got to have this therapy and we are going no matter what."
Well-wishers have raised almost £5,000 for Sky-Marie's gruelling course of treatment at the Paul Scherrer Institute near Zurich.
The former Castleford High School pupil will travel there for a week's preparation and testing on Monday.
Tracy, 36, added: "The walk went really well and our raffle alone raised £445.
"Sky-Marie has been incredibly brave although she's starting to realise that there are weeks of daily radiotherapy sessions and hospital visits ahead.
"I want to let everyone who has helped us know how grateful I am, they are all fantastic."
Three raffle prizes have not been claimed from Sunday's event.
To claim one, call Tracy Cartwright on 07798 691137.
