CASTLEFORD soldier Cpl Richard Street – who worked through enemy fire in Afghanistan – has been awarded the Military Cross for bravery.
The army mechanic, 31, was recognised in last week's Military Honours and Awards list after he managed to recover an armoured vehicle, which had been blown up, as bullets were fired around him.

The former Castleford High School pupil, who joined the army in 1994, said: "It is my job to assist in the recovery of vehicles – I could hear the bullets cracking over the top of my head but this is what we do our training for and it just clicks in.
"I suppose it is a time to stop and think – but not for too long."

Cpl Street, who lives in Tidworth, Wiltshire, with his wife, Sharon and their three children, was congratulated in by Lt Gen Graham Lamb at a special awards ceremony in Windsor.

A citation for the soldier said: "Whilst under sustained attack in his vehicle he showed personal courage and skill in dismounting and completing a recovery task under fire. He was an example to all around him."
Cpl Street's mother, Linda, still lives in Castleford and his father, John, lives in Ferrybridge.
