CHANGED plans for a food store on Castleford's former Pioneer supermarket car park are due to be approved today.
The Co-operative Group's proposal for the Lidl outlet – as well as reconfiguration of the car park and a service yard – off Back Bank Street are recommended for approval subject to conditions at Wakefield Council's planning and highways meeting.
A
previous scheme for the store with a Wilkinson branch was rejected last year but a new Wilkinson has since opened at the old Pioneer on Carlton Street.
Castleford councillor Tony Wallis said: "I was disappointed when the plans were turned down.
"I would welcome another attraction to bring people to this side of town and another retail outlet in Castleford, as Wilkinson's is doing very well.
"We do need to look at the archaeology on site though and make sure there is enough parking."
Planners rejected the old scheme because of inadequate pedestrian, cyclist and car facilities and because it did not take into account other nearby developments.
Alterations include increasing the size of the proposed store, changing service facilities and access as well as putting in 13 cycle parking bays.
Car parking for 135 vehicles will serve both the Lidl and Wilkinson outlets.
