UNIVERSITY researchers are urging Castleford workers to record memories of their life to form part of an academic study.
A team from York University are coming to the town to interview people who have worked in the mining, chemical, glass works or other industries for a report called "memory and heritage in Castleford", which is being paid for by the British Academy.

Academics from the university have already worked with Castleford Heritage Trust in work to publish a book on the uses of heritage.

Heritage studies lecturer Laurajane Smith, who is leading the project, said: "We are continuing our studies in Castleford.

"What we are interested in doing is interviewing people about their histories and memories of the town, and which features of it are important or make up its heritage."

People can share their story with researchers at the Bridge Arts centre on Sagar Street from 10am to 2.30pm every Friday in March.

The sessions are drop in but appointments can also be made.

A workshop on March 12 will be a special event dedicated to memories of the 1984/85 miners' strike to mark its 25th anniversary.

Alison Drake, chairman of Castleford Heritage Trust, said: "This is an open invitation for miners and their families to call in, show us photographs, memorabilia, reminisce before recording cameras and have refreshments with old friends or Trust     members."

For more details, or to make an appointment to record your memories, call Laurajane Smith or Gary Campbell from the University of York on 01904 633313 or 07981 195931.
