Appeal for heart help

I WOULD like to call on readers to help save lives by signing up to the British Heart Foundation’s Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge on July 21.

This popular event offers the challenge of walking the three highest peaks in the county – Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in the Yorkshire Dales – and experiencing some of the UK’s most stunning scenery.

Walkers will be supported all the way with marshals, first aid, recovery vehicles and refreshments to keep them safe, well and motivated as they support the nation’s heart charity.

I know that heart disease touches people of all ages and across the region.

Sadly it is still the nation’s biggest killer and unfortunately West Yorkshire does not escape its grip, with the male death rate for coronary heart disease being 16 per cent higher than the average for England and the female rate nine per cent.

Lives are cut short, and for those living with heart disease, life can be frightening and hard. With 44 per cent of people in the West Yorkshire region telling us they do physical exercise less than once a week signing up to a BHF event is a great way to take steps to looking after your health by getting active.

Despite major advances in heart research, education and care, there is still a huge amount to learn, and a lot of work to be done.

We urgently need the support of people like Express readers to help us continue our work in the region.

The BHF currently funds 20 health care professionals in West Yorkshire, 13 life-saving defibs in communities across the region and research grants totalling £14.4 million across Yorkshire and Humberside to continue its pioneering work.

We urgently need the support of readers to help us continue our life-saving work and hope they will join us.

Register online today at bhf.org.uk/y3p or call freephone 0800 169 3672, email northwestwales@bhf.org.uk for entry forms.
