A new cafe on Ropergate has won the prestigious facade of the year from Pontefract Civic Society in its annual design awards.

Jolly’s won the Countess of Rosse plaque in the annual awards for what the society described as a “well-designed fascia and signage”.

Owner Fran Jolly said: “It’s absolutely wonderful, especially as we only opened a year ago.

“I think the award is a wonderful idea, it’s very encouraging to businesses. The plaque is in pride of place.”

Design awards also went to national firms Vodafone and Nationwide, while the improvement award was given to the Green Dragon pub, which the society said “has been sympathetically repainted and improved to retain its attractive character”. The Malt Shovel was runner up.

Haribo’s Tanshelf House won the Heritage Award, and St Giles’ Church was given a commendation in the same category for its first phase of redevelopment, which includes moving the northern entrance to the church and disabled access on the southern entrance.

Pontefract Bus Station also received a special commendation for its welcoming public area and interior.
