ADVENTUROUS women with learning difficulties completed an arduous camping expedition to achieve a prestigious honour.
Jane Barnes, Kerry Wright, Emma Thomas and Becky Goodyear received their Duke of Edinburgh Awards after tackling a gruelling country hike, learning about wildlife and volunteering in the community last year.

Featherstone’s Millennium Care Services – which supports people with learning disabilities – put the group through the award.

Steve Drewitt, assistant manager at the firm’s activity resource centre, said: “The group’s expedition was a great success.

“They camped at Silverwood near Barnsley, working as a team to cook and carry their equipment while taking photographs, bark rubbings and charcoal drawings.

“We aim to encourage people with learning disabilities to reach their potential and the award is a perfect way to help us do this.”

The team were presented with certificates and badges at Millennium Care Services, on Station Lane, last week and a group of men from the centre will will head off on their own expedition in May.
