BOOZE can no longer be bought from a Featherstone store which allegedly sold drugs over the counter and alcohol to underage youngsters.
The owners of Featherstone Convenience Store, on Green Lane, surrended their alcohol licence at a Wakefield Council licensing meeting last Wednesday.

Police arrested a man after raiding the shop – which will continue trading as a grocer – and discovering substances thought to be cannabis, ecstasy and heroin in a drugs bust on Friday March 14.

PC Dave Malik, licensing officer for West Yorkshire Police, told the meeting: "This is one of the most outrageous and disgusting examples of running a licensed premises we have seen in not just Wakefield, but West Yorkshire.”

A police report to the meeting said that about 30 tablets thought to be ecstasy were found on a shelf in the shop's store room and a knuckle duster and home-made cosh were behind the counter.

It revealed that drugs paraphenalia was discovered inside the shop – with a quantity of suspected heroin found inside a parked car outside the premises.

It is also alleged that the store, which the report says failed an alcohol test purchase on May 11, sold booze to underage youngsters.

Dozens of residents who live near the shop claim they have been plagued by teenage troublemakers buying alcohol from the shop and signed a petition for the licence to be revoked.

Pauline Beckett, secretary of the Tenants’ and Residents’ Group for Sycamore Way and Areas, told the Express: “I’m absolutely delighted the alcohol licence was surrended.

“Problems with youngsters from all over Featherstone coming to this side of towm and drinking, being noisy, urinating on walls and leaving a mess have been going on for months.

“Most nearby tenants are elderly, some disabled or terminally ill, and we’ve been frightened to death.”

The man – who was arrested after the drugs raid in connection with possession of class A and class C drugs – is now on police bail.
