FOUR generations of a family – including a 98-year-old great-grandmother – worked together in Featherstone's oldest business last week.
Printers Harris Bros Gazette Ltd, on Albert Street, was host to a family affair when young Patrick Sayers completed his work experience placement.

The 15-year-old joined his uncle Martyn Harris, grandad Peter, great-uncles Michael and Richard as well as his great-grandmother Mary, 98, who is the company’s chairman of the board.

Managing director Peter Harris, 73, said: “Patrick wants to be a graphic designer and came up from Surrey for his placement, it went very well.

“He is studying printing at school so we gave him some letterpress samples and objects for class.

“It was wonderful to have four generations printing.”

Harris Bros Gazette Ltd was formed in 1924 by two brothers, Harry Harris and his brother Charles, the late husband of Mary.

Former Pontefract King’s High School pupil Peter said they hoped the family firm would carry on until its centenary in 2024.

He added: “Printing has changed more in the last 20 years than it did in the previous 200.

“My two brothers and I came here straight from school. We enjoy it but we’re never going to be wealthy.

“We’ve kept the firm small although we could have expanded because we only wanted to be a printer.

“One afternoon Wall Street called and asked us to invest in shares, I had to explain that our title is bigger than the firm.

“Hopefully the business will carry on for 100 years.”
