MP Jon Trickett is demanding that millions of pounds of government cash be pumped into Featherstone to help transform the town.
He is calling for a new partnership scheme to spearhead development and bring new shops, housing and jobs to the former mining community.
Mr Trickett – who last week led a Commons debate on Featherstone's regeneration – said: "Featherstone needs a rapid injection of energy and money.

"During the last few years there's been a lot of talking about regeneration but not enough doing.
"It's the government's job to sort out something as big as this. I'm banging my fist on the table and demanding action.
"I want agencies to come together and create a partnership to work with fresh money from central government.

"Some talking has resulted in renaissance and the masterplan for Featherstone.
"But we've got enough plans and now need to see if we can walk the walk."
The proposed Coalfield Action Partnership Area – paid for by the government – would see four authorities, Wakefield Council, Yorkshire Forward, English Partnerships and the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, overhaul town centre development and housing.

Mr Trickett – whose Hemsworth constituency includes Featherstone – says he has taken ministers on tours of the town's troubled Girnhill Lane estate and wants to see work there completed.
He said: "Everybody is frustrated – they want action and as MP it's my job to try and make this happen.
"Residents and community groups have worked hard to get plans in place and they would be involved in the new partnership.

"We need to see housing, including Girnhill Lane, sorted and make sure that new work goes to Featherstone people.
"The town centre needs refurbishing. When the supermarket went it was a blow but also created an opportunity for a new one.
"Green Lane used to be a road to nowhere but now the industrial estate there includes many developments and has created 2,000 jobs.

"If we can get the partnership underway we're looking at several million pounds of government money with more from private companies if we can entice them."
Mr Trickett now hopes agencies will meet to discuss the partnership and ministers will approve funding.
He added: "I'm pressing for everyone to meet before summer. Minister Iain Wright was enthusiastic in the debate and I'm confident we can get government committment and a partnership set up.

"About £30m has been spent on Featherstone but the regeneration hasn't really taken off – it's the last piece in the jigsaw and needs one more push.
"Without this action it will still improve, but slowly.
"I've talked about Featherstone's regeneration at the highest level of government.
"I'm an impatient man and have waited long enough – certainly the people of Featherstone have."
