A SURPRISE party marked the retirement of Maureen Dawson after 30 years leading 2nd Featherstone Girl Guides.
Around 130 past and present members were among the guests, including all the leaders she had worked with, together with most of the original members of the group, which still meets at Featherstone Methodist Church as it did when Maureen started it in 1978.

New co-leader Kathryn Hulme said: “Although Maureen knew we’d planned something it was a big surprise for her, not only because of the numbers but because she wasn’t expecting to see all those adults.

“She also received a lovely card from former chapel minister John McCarthy, who had asked Maureen to set the guides up all those years ago.”

Kathryn, who now runs the group with colleague Joanne Betchetti, added: “They’re big shoes to fill and to be honest I’m a bit nervous following in Maureen’s footsteps. She did a brilliant job.”
