WOUNDED soldiers were given a boost by Featherstone Rovers after the club donated cash to an Army charity.
Rovers’ chief executive Andy Prout handed military chiefs a cheque for £400 to aid Help For Heroes – a charity which looks after servicemen and women injured in Afghanistan or Iraq.
Mr Prout said the club wanted to help after players tackled a match with soliders leaving for Afghanistan, and as thanks for Army sponsorship.
He added: “It was very humbling speaking to the soldiers. Our donation to Help For Heroes is also a token of appreciation for new Army sponsorship for the rest of the season, which has provided us with new training kit and great motivation for our players.”
Col Sgt Glenn Clayton, of Wakefield Army careers office, received the cheque with colleagues at half-time during Rovers’ televised clash with Halifax.
He said: “Our work with Rovers is a fantastic way of contributing to the community and of benefit to all.
“Sport and fitness is a major part of Army life and sponsorship is one way we can help young men and women in sporting activities.”
