Do we need power stations?

IN response to John Denison's letter ("Wind farms not answer", May 29), I like the idea of a clean renewable energy source in our area; it would be a refreshing change from the three large power stations visible.
Statements by anti-wind farm groups and individuals not only contradict established government research but have a scaremongering feel to them.
The suggestions that noise will "incalculable" seem exaggerated; a government report suggests noise by t
urbines would be, even at 350 metres, similar to that of a car travelling slowly in the distance. As most of Darrington is very near one of the busiest roads in the country, its noise would, in many places, almost certainly mask anything from the turbines.

With regards to suggestions of infrasound from turbines being damaging, various reports conducted for government departments such as DEFRA can "state quite categorically that there is no significant infrasound problem from current designs of wind turbines''.
Mr Denison argues that motorists on the A1 would be distracted by the turbines, causing accidents. Distractions occur everywhere; one could be distracted just as easily by anything: a passing bird, a fast car or even Darrington itself.

All I can do is ask people to do their own research before they sign up and not to allow their views to be subverted by unsupported statements made by people who oppose the turbines. The turbines would produce a great deal of electricity for the area and help to remove the need for the truly ugly and polluting Ferrybridge, Eggborough and Drax power stations.
