ON behalf of the Ackworth Heritage Group we were appalled when we heard that Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church in Ackworth had to close.
This church, much-loved and with a large congregation, was the heart of the Catholic congregation in Ackworth. It has had its heart ripped out, its members left lost and alone.
Many members attended this church all their lives. It stands proud opposite the Ackworth war memorial, where members of all denominations come together on November 11 at 11am.

After the remembrance service those attending were invited into the Catholic church to enjoy refreshments and a very warm welcome. This year is going to be very different indeed.
The population of Ackworth is growing rapidly, so I'm sure the newcomers to the village, many belonging to the Catholic church, will be very disappointed when they find out what has happened.

Once this church is demolished, it is gone forever. How many times have we seen this happen, then find it has been a mistake, when it is too late.
The person responsible for the closure should think again. Surely the church should have a reprieve?
