Sympathy for smokers

I AM not a smoker, but walking around Pontefract town centre I cannot help but have a lot of sympathy for them.
What a sad state of affairs when a quarter of the population is banished to street corners. What sort of society are we creating when we cannot provide a civilised environment for people to enjoy a cigarette?
The ban in pubs highlights this policy more than most. It was OK in summer, when it is quite nice to stand outside enjoying a cig and a drink, but in the cold damp depths of winter it is a different story.
Why a reasonable solution could not be found, I don't know. I understand people who don't smoke don't want to be exposed to the fumes, but I am sure it would have made common sense to have provided in a separate room/area.
I've no figures, but I am sure the pub business has suffered. In the week most pubs are dead; yes, prices do have an effect, but the ban is certainly finishing them off.
A drink and a smoke was a way of life for many, it was what they enjoyed. It is another feature of our way of life that is being lost, I don't smoke but I feel for them.
Smoking kills, as do cars and alcohol and we don't ban them. With all the problems facing us, I am sure there were bigger issues that needed addressing.
