Charity coastal bike challenge

THRILL-seeking cyclists from Pontefract and Castleford were pushed to the limit as they pedalled from coast to coast to raise cash for charity.
The team of adrenalin junkies tackled a gruelling 140-mile course during three days, from Whitehaven on the west coast to Sunderland on the North Sea, to boost the coffers of Sustrans – an organisation which promotes environmentally-friendly forms of transport.
Richard Cryer, event organiser, said: "This really pushed some of our riders to their limits.
"We arrived in Whitehaven during a torrential downpour, so we spend the first day cycling in rain and heavy winds. Everyone was exhausted and soaked to the bone by the time we arrived in Penrith.
"The other days were tough for different reasons – including steep and long hill climbs – but the weather was glorious."
The team of 25 cyclists – which included Fred Stubbs and Graham Baines, of Pontefract, and Nicholas Smith, of Castleford – hope to hit their fundraising target of £4,000 for the transport charity.
Richard, 39, of Castleford, helps to organise fundraising challenges with the Charity Adventure organisation.
He added: "We run as many of these events a year as we can fit around our family and working lives.
"We make no money from the riders who volunteer to take part. We simply organise the travel, accommodation, routes, sponsorship forms and and then guide and assist the team during the ride.
"We get our rewards from making money for worthwhile charities and also from seeing a relative set of strangers become really good friends over the course of just a few days."
