DELIGHTED shoppers stopped in their tracks to watch former councillor Winifred McLoughlin crown Castleford's maypole on Saturday.
The former mayor of Castleford and freeman of the district carried out the tradition as talented members of the Castleford Maypole and Dance Troupe entertained eager crowds.

The event took place in Henry Moore Square on Carlton Street – where a specially designed maypole was put in place for the annual occasion last year.

Alison Drake, chairman of Castleford Heritage Trust, said: “There was an excellent turn out at this lovely day.

“Our dancers looked superb in their new costumes and because the maypole was specially constructed for this event by the square’s designers it is easier to use. They tried out new routines for the first time on Saturday.

“I’d like to thank Winifred and Gretta Sharkey for turning out to make the maypole crowning so special.”
