A DOCTOR at Pontefract General Infirmary is holding an exhibition of his paintings and poetry to raise cash for a cancer charity.
Consultant gastroenterologist Dr Pulak Sahay, also an amateur poet and artist, wants to raise awareness of gullet cancer and charity Patient Support and Research into Barratt’s Osophagus (PROBE) during a special show at Pontefract Library from July 14-30.

The doctor, who works in the endoscopy department at PGI, said: “Barrett’s oesophagus is the only pre-cancerous condition that leads to gullet cancer – the fastest growing cancer in the western world.

“The underlying problem is one of heartburn or acid reflux disease, which is something that a lot of us suffer from but continuously brush under the carpet.

“I don’t know how much money will be generated as I am an amateur painter and poet, but I hope the fact that I am doing it for a charity that I am passionate about should hopefully raise the awareness of the general public regarding this common but potentially significant problem which needs to be curbed before it gets out of hand.”

Dr Sahay’s work will be on show from 9.30am to 7pm on Sundays-Wednesdays, Fridays and until 4pm on Saturdays. Admission is free.
