Dr Pulak Sahay held a month-long exhibition at Pontefract Library to raise awareness of gullet cancer and charity Patient Support and Research into Barratt’s Oesophagus (PROBE).

The doctor, a consultant gastorenterologist and amateur painter and poet, said: “The exhibition was extremely well-attended and a massive success. It raised between £600 and £700 for PROBE – but more important than that raised awareness gullet of cancer, which is the fastest growing cancer in the western world.”

Dr Sahay, who works in the endoscopy department at PGI, hopes to open a West Yorkshire group of the charity in the autumn.

He said: “Barrett’s oesophagus is the only pre-cancerous condition that leads to gullet cancer – and the underlying problem is one of heartburn or acid reflux disease, which is something that a lot of us suffer from but continuously brush under the carpet.

“More than 100 people attended the exhibition, and hopefully know more about this condition.”
