A LAST-MINUTE try in extra time handed victory to Pontefract youngsters in a tag rugby competition.
Speedy students from St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School drew 24-24 with Knottingley Junior and Infant School but went on to score the winning try in the sixth Five Towns School Sport Co-ordinator Partnership contest.
More than 30 teams from across the district took part in the event held at Featherstone Rovers’ Chris Moyles Stadium.
Paul Ogilvie, partnership development manager, said: “The final was close as the teams traded tries, and by the end of the match they could not be separated.
“We used a golden try time to decide the winner and our excited audience applauded both teams for their excellent performance. “
Referees on the day were young leaders from secondary schools in the district and medals were awarded to both teams in the final.
Andy Prout, Featherstone Rovers’ chief executive, also presented the Fairplay Award to Knottingley’s England Lane Primary School for outstanding team spirit, honest play and hard work.
Mr Ogilvie added: “We would like to thank Featherstone Rovers, Andy Prout and community development officer Kevin Hobbs for their help.
“A great day was had by all.”
