TEENAGERS at Knottingley High School have had a headstart in learning about driving and road safety.
A group of 15-year-old year ten pupils took part in a four-week course about travel awareness run by Wakefield Council with the help of PCSOs and the fire service.

The course covered topics such as drink driving and the effects of alcohol, speeding, stopping distances and road signs.

Firefighters also came in to teach the children about the risks of fire in vehicles and the dangers of oil spillages.

On the final day, two cars from Ferrybridge Driving Instructors came in and the pupils were allowed to have a go behind the wheel.

Teacher Graham Haigh, a senior manager at the school, said: “The idea behind it was to educate the children about driving and teaching them early about the hazards and dangers involved.

“It was absolutely excellent. It was very well-prepared and the children really enjoyed it.”
