THERE'S nothing unusual about musically-minded folk getting together to form a band – unless, that is, the average age of its members is a few weeks short of 80.
That's what residents of the Queens Avenue sheltered housing complex, on Pontefract's Barracks estate, have done with the formation of Silver Threads, under the leadership of 80 year-old Tom Kennedy.
He said: "There are 13 of us in the band with a combined age of 1,022. We play old-fashioned instruments such as tambourines, castanets and washboards, and we sing, too.

"The band got together 12 weeks ago and once we reckoned we were making good enough progress, we decided we ought to put on an evening for people on the estate."
Their first concert took place last Friday and went down a storm with a 40-strong audience of neighbours and relatives, much to the delight of Tom and his colleagues.

He said: "We had a really good night and were very surprised by the response from the audience. Our oldest member, Marion Lockwood who's 95, got dressed up in her finery to play Dolly when we sung Hello Dolly and she looked great."
Having been bitten by the bug, the performing pensioners are aiming to stage another show at Christmas and are also looking for an accompanist who can help them hone their act

Tom said: "None of us are musicians and no-one has taken part in anything like this before, so it would be very good to have someone who could play for us."
Anyone interested – regardless of their age – should contact Tom on 01977 791467.
