HONESTY is the best policy for Castleford soulmates Betty and Reuben Miller, who will mark 50 years of marriage this Saturday.
Mr Miller – who tied the knot with Betty at Nostell Priory’s Spread Eagle pub on May 3 1958 – said his wife was his “best friend” and that the secret of a successful marriage was being truthful.

The 69-year-old, of Thornhill Road, Glass Houghton, said: “We’ve always been honest with each other and Betty can read my mind.

“She knows what I’m thinking before I do and has been my best friend as well as wife for 50 years.”

The sweethearts, both former stewards, met at York Barracks.

Brighouse-born Mr Miller, who also worked at the former Hickson and Welch factory, added: “I was on armed duty at the barracks when Betty came to join the NAAFI. I gave her a lift to the right place and that was it, we started courting pretty much straight away. We were very young when we got married.”

The couple, who have five children, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary with a family dinner.
