Special honour for community stalwarts

FOUR people who make a difference to Featherstone's communities have been thanked with a special honour.
Featherstone Cricket Club stalwart Jack Sykes, Brian Harper, a Royal British Legion and charity campaigner, and Maureen Dawson, girl guide leader for 30 years, were each presented with a mayor’s award from Featherstone Town Council last week.
Paul Rhodes, former headteacher at Featherstone St Thomas’ CE Primary School and leader of Featherstone Male Voice Choir, also received a cut glass goblet at the ceremony.
Mr Harper, 75, said: “I’ve worked for the community all my life and feel honoured to get an award for it.
“Giving is so much better than receiving, I’ve always enjoyed been part of the British Legion and other groups.
“I’m almost 76 and have had to cut back a bit but I do plan to carry on.”
Town council leader Dave Herrington hailed the award winners as “outstanding.”
He added: “We’ve presented these awards to highlight the contribution of these dedicated people who serve the community.
“All of them have worked tirelessly for a number of years and fully deserve this recognition.”
