TALENTED youngsters at a Pontefract school have been crowned national sword dancing champions.
The team, from Larks Hill Junior and Infant School, competed in Loughborough against young teams from all over the country and won first prize for the under 12s.
Dancers wowed the judges with their rapper dancing routine, which involves flexible sprung steel swords and is a dance style particular to the north east of England.
A second team from the school, the Larks Hill Sword Squad Mini, also received a competitor's rosette.
Teacher Sally Atkinson, who trains the teams, said: "The children were ecstatic to win. We hoped to win because they had practised so hard for it."
Damien Barber, who organised the dance competition said: "I think Larks Hill Sword Squad winning overall was perfect as they are a great model of a team – a mixture of all the elements that make up a good rapper side and hopefully the others will think about what they need to do to next time to beat them."
