FUNDRAISING therapists from Knottingley have put a much-needed roof over the heads of a poor family in India.
The group, which holds monthly cut-price complementary therapy sessions at Knottingley Town Hall in aid of charity, have raised enough money to build their second house in a small village in India.

The building will house a widow called Soni and her seven children and this week the therapists received photos of the finished home.

Carole Williams, reiki master and quantum touch healer, said: “It was very moving to see the photos. We had a bit of money left over but not quite enough to pay for a house, so two of our members paid the extra money needed.”

The generous members, Denise Palmer and Betty Wardle, have called the house Berylray in memory of Denise’s mother and Betty Wardle’s husband.

Carole added: “Soni lived with her seven children and lost her husband to tuberculosis. Her priest told her we had decided to build a house for her and she was over the moon and just cried. She was absolutely overwhelmed. I suppose it was like winning the lottery for them. She has a home now so she will never have to worry about that again.”

The therapists returned from their annual India trip earlier this year when they saw the first house they funded, which was named the Edwin Beckett House, in memory of the late manager of Knottingley Town Hall.

Carole said: “All of the therapists, and Soni, would like to thank everyone involved in raising the money to make all this possible. I would also like to thank Wakefield Council’s community chest fund which has provided us with about £1,700 to support us over the years.”

The therapists’ meet on the first Wednesday of every month at Knottingley Town Hall, for sessions including reiki, reflexology, massage, Indian head massage and quantum touch. Their next meeting takes place on Wednesday July 2 from 4pm to 9pm.
