Thousands flock to liquorice festival
THOUSANDS of visitors packed the streets of Pontefract at the weekend for the town's "best ever" liquorice festival.
Sweet-toothed revellers from across the country took a step back in time at Pontefract Castle's medieval day on Saturday before enjoying a tasty parade, street entertainment and music in the town centre on Sunday, National Liquorice Day.
Festival organiser Bev Adams said: " It was absolutely fantastic and the streets were packed.
"We had 5,700 people visit the castle and on Sunday there were times when you could barely move for all the people."
This year's festival was cut back to a weekend after vital funding was slashed.
Highlights included a six-foot liquorice dalek on display in Pontefract Museum, which drew in a 4,000 strong crowd.
Bev added: "The dalek was a real hit as people queued across the town to see it.
"Despite the problems this year's festival was probably the best ever, we pulled out all the stops.
"After seeing what the event does for the town it would be devastating to lose it and we are now looking at funding for next year."
