Youngsters from Rookeries Carleton J&I School signed as well as sang when they became the first choir in the history of Pontefract Music Festival to perform in British Sign Language.

The choir entered the junior choir competition in the annual festival and performed What a Wonderful World and The Rookeries Jungle, a song specially written for the choir by Paul Whitaker. The choir received the Millennium Award in the competition.

Norman Dale, of the festival, said: “It was a wonderful experience and the other choirs and audience were absolutely captivated by them. They sang beautifully.”
