A Pontefract college has been given a £1.5m cash injection to invest in a new visual arts centre on campus.

NEW College has won a bid to replace their existing art, textiles and photography building at the Park Lane campus.

The government funding will be used to build the new facility which will be used to offer new courses in art and design.

Pauline Hagen, prinipal of the college, said: “This will help expand our art and design curriculum. We will be running an art foundation course and we’re looking at higher education courses and foundation degrees in the future.

“It will enable our exisiting art students to have the facilities they deserve.”

NEW College applied to the Big Colleges Investment Fund to replace the 40-year-old art building in January and hope to open the new centre next spring.

Ms Hagen added: “Some colleges got nothing and we got the maximum amount so we are absolutely delighted.

“We’ll have an almost entirely new college by the time this has finished. In these times of austerity it’s fantastic we’ve been so successful and that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.”
