THE Express campaign to Save Our A&E has been backed by more than 2,500 residents – and petition slips are still flooding in.

At the last count this week, 2,574 people have signed the document in support of Pontefract Hospital’s under-threat department – either online or by sending back a coupon from the paper.

At the moment there is no closing date for the petition, which will be handed to bosses from the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust and NHS Wakefield when a formal consultation period is launched on plans to downgrade the Friarwood Lane facility to minor injuries or illness unit.

A trust board meeting last month heard the consultation period, which was expected to begin in the spring, was now likely to be later in the year.

The unit has been shut between 10pm and 8am since November 1 because of a shortage of doctors.

We are still calling for the unit to be reinstated to the 24-hour consultant-led unit the town was promised when the £60m hospital opened last January.

To request a paper copy of the petition to distribute in your community, email hannah.postles@pandcexpress.co.uk, call 01977 781933 or visit the Express offices at 1 Front Street, Pontefract, or 8 Bank Street, Castleford.
