A CASTLEFORD church that opened as a temporary building 90 years ago is to close.
St James' at Three Lane Ends started welcoming parishioners in the 1920s when the structure was moved there from Pontefract, where it was
used as a community hall.

But the building's age and a dwindling congregation means the church will hold its
?nal service this month.

Rev Michael Wood, Rector of Castleford, said: "It's been a tiny congregation for a long while and that is a contributing factor but also this was never meant to be a permanent building, it's come to the
end of its life.
"St James' is aquaint place and it's a shame we are losing places like it but it's just unsustainable.
"It was a second hand building when it was brought here from Pontefract, where it had been used as a hall.
"The congregation was about half a dozen strong, then we lost of couple of people, so it really is a handful but they are very faithful.
"Closing St James' is very sad for them."

Bishop of Wake?eld, the Rt Rev Stephen Platten, will lead a thanksgiving service at St James' on Wednesday July 21. A ?nal service will also be preached by the Archdeacon of Pontefract Peter Townley
on Sunday July 25 at 3pm.

Rev Wood said: "This is also a time of celebration because St James' has been there for such a long time and seen so much – it's been an integral part of the community."
