BUDDING astronauts will meet a pilot from failed space mission Apollo 13 when he touches down in Pontefract for an inspirational talk.
Fred Haise Jnr, 74, is jetting in to visit youngsters at Halfpenny Lane Junior and Infant School tomorrow morning. Later in the day he will also speak at Carleton Community High School about his out-of-this-world experience as lunar module pilot on the famous craft. He will tell stargazers how crew on board Apollo 13 survived after the mission was crippled by an oxygen tank explosion and forced to return to Earth in April 1970, portrayed in the 1995 Tom Hanks film.

Event organiser Ken Willoughby, vice-president of the West Yorkshire Astronomical Society, has also brought astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Charlie Duke and Alan Bean to Pontefract.

He said: “I’ve only got about ten tickets left from more than 500. I think this will be the most interesting astronaut visit we’ve had so far.”

Mr Haise Jnr will meet students at Carleton Community High School before he hosts his talk at the school at 7.30pm.
