BREASTFEEDING mums can get a free nursing bra at special events next week as part of breastfeeding awareness week.
Wakefield District Primary Care Trust (PCT) will be offering bra measuring services and giving away £4,000 of nursing bras to breastfeeding mums and women who are 36-weeks or more pregnant.
Claire Varey, community staff nurse, said: “A well-fittin
g nursing bra can make all the difference in helping women to successfully breastfeed. Anyone who comes along will be measured up by our trained breastfeeding peer supporters and may be given a free nursing bra.
“Unfortunately we only have limited supplies though, so it will be on a first come, first served basis only.”
The PCT will have stands around the district next week, where there will also be information and advice about breastfeeding and also about support available for mums in the local area.
The bra giveaway takes place at Airedale Children’s Centre on Wednesday May 14 from 9.30am to 10.45am and at Carlton Lanes Shopping Centre, Castleford, on Saturday May 17 from 10.30am to 2.30pm.
The PCT has also joined forces with Arriva buses to promote its new breastfeeding campaign, called Breastfeeding...It’s Your Choice, which is running throughout next week.
There will be eye-catching posters and leaflets to encourage mums to give breastfeeding a go.
Claire said: “Mothers need to know more about infant feeding before they can make an informed decision to breastfeed or not. Going to a breastfeeding group ante-natally can help mothers to find out more about breastfeeding and the realities.
“If a mother chooses to breastfeed there is lots of support in the district. If they have a query or concern, or just want to sit and chat with other breastfeeding mums, there are 14 breastfeeding groups across the district.”
Mums can contact the Patients’ Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0845 602 4832 to find their nearest breastfeeding group.
