A STANDARDS watchdog has ruled out an investigation into controversial comments about "cool" knives made by Pontefract North Conservative councillor Philip Thomas.
The Standards Board for England has said it will not take any action after a request to investigate an allegation relating to Coun Thomas' conduct was referred by Wakefield Council's standards committee.
Outraged Labour politicians called for Coun Thomas to resign after he said he owned a meat cleaver and two machetes "bought as much because I found them cool as their practical use" on his blog in August.
Coun Thomas told the Express: "The standards board have said it's not worth pursuing at all, I have been totally cleared.
"From my perspective I'm relieved, I just want to focus on local issues as all this has done nothing to help the people of Wakefield.
"I want to try and make a difference to people's lives and wallets – I blog my views so people can read them and agree or disagree."
Heated debate about Coun Thomas' comments – and his other outspoken blogs on topics including drugs and the police – was sparked as the row rumbled on.
Teacher Coun Thomas and Conservative party leaders said his views had been taken out of context.
Wakefield's Conservative party leader Bryan Denson said: "We believe in freedom of speech and never thought there would be a case to answer.
"It's a waste of taxpayers' money to spend two and a half hours discussing this as has been done at council meetings.
"Not only am I delighted that he has been exonerated, but I think Coun Thomas is a good councillor who will make a valuable contribution to future council and chamber debate."
But Wakefield Council leader Peter Box said any disciplinary action against Coun Thomas should be taken by his party.
He added: "I never expected that this was a matter where the standards board would have jurisdiction. This is not a matter for the council, the council has clearly expressed their feelings about the views Coun Thomas holds. It is not personal. The whole issue is what action are the Conservative party going to take against Coun Thomas or do they think its acceptable that these views are held by a Conservative councillor?
"The council has received a letter from the chairman of the national Conservative party which said they are taking steps to prevent this kind of situation."
A statement from the standards board said it was taking no action because "we do not take the view that the complaint, if proven, would amount to a breach of the code of conduct."
