PONTEFRACT North councillors have objected to a supermarket's bid to sell booze 24 hours a day.
Couns Clive Tennant and Pat Garbutt fear residents near Pontefract's Asda on Halfpenny Lane would suffer from an increase in anti-social behaviour in the area if Wakefield Council agreed to change the shop's premises licence.

Coun Tennant said: "We are opposing this application on the basis that if it were approved local residents could see an increase in the number of people drinking on the streets."

Asda Stores Ltd has applied to sell alcohol all day, seven days a week and provide "late-night refreshment" at the store from 11pm to 5am.

Coun Garbutt said: "I am concerned that if this application is granted, there may be an increase in alcohol related disorder and incidents in and around the Halfpenny Lane area.

"This would undoubtedly have an adverse effect on the local community."

Asda's application will be heard at a council licensing meeting.
