FAMILIES had an "eye-opening" experience of life in a wheelchair at an event to help disabled youngsters become more independent
Relatives or friends of children who use the equipment also enjoyed wheelchair games and sports at at Featherstone Technology College on Saturday.
The free mobility training course was organised by small national charity the Association of Wheelchair Children.
Therapy assistant Sarah Wild said: "The day went really well. We had a great turnout with lots of families coming along.
"As we bring spare chairs everyone gets to have a go. It is an eye-opening experience that shows people what their child has to do every day.
"Wheelchair training sounds quite scary but it is good fun. We play games or sports such as basketball as well as showing youngsters how to get around more easily or negotiate places in their chairs.
"Children come on the courses again and again."
Teen actress Eleanor Tomlinson – who is to star in Doctor Who and a film by Tim Burton this year – attended Saturday's event as a patron of AWC.
Sarah added: "All our courses are free to families as we are funded by corporate or trust fund money.
"We've been going for about 20 years but we are just not getting the funds at the moment so the charity is struggling.
"People can donate if they like and get in touch if they'd like to attend a training event."
