A BRAVE pair of PCs have received a top policing honour after rescuing a man from a river in Knottingley.
PCs Robert Dovey and Glen Preer were this week presented with the Royal Humane Society Award by their Chief Constable Sir Norman Bettison in a ceremony in Leeds.
The pair, of Wakefield division, received the Chief Constable's Commendation – the hi
ghest accolade awarded within the force – along with people involved with eight other operations and incidents across the country.
The award recognised the PCs' work when they received a call at 3.21am on Thursday November 1 last year about a man threatening to jump off a bridge in Knottingley.
The pair checked all of the bridges in the area and found the suicidal man at a bridge over the Aire and Calder canal.
They attempted to talk the man down from the bridge but he threw himself in the canal.
PC Dovey risked his life by entering the water and eventually both officers were able to rescue the man.
Sir Norman Bettison said: "Policing goes on often outside of the view of the public we serve. I am immensely proud of the extraordinary people who do an extraordinary job in protecting and serving the public of West Yorkshire."
